5 Release Strategies I Took From Rick Rubin
Share
Currently Rick Rubin has been on a tear with building up noise for his new book.
While I haven't read it, I have seen it everywhere.
Youtube, Podcasts, Reels, you name it Rick Rubin is on it lol.
Watching all this occur made me want to take some notes on how he has was able to build so much momentum for this release.
Here are 5 principles I found useful that can be taken away from the current Rick Rubin release:
1) He collaborates with big names.
Rick Rubin finds names that are at his relative size that he can collaborate with such as Andrew Huberman shown below:
While we all can't get on a Podcast that has 1M+ subscribers what we can do is find people in the community that are at a viable size for you.
If you are at 1k followers look for others around you at that size to collaborate with.
Also don't limit yourself to that. Send out some stretch messages to bigger channels to just in case they want to give you a shot.
Do the opposite too, if a channel is smaller than you and you enjoy what they create then collaborate with them.
2) He talks about whats interesting to the audience.
People don't understand "Niche Marketing".
They think they need to keep confining what they do down to the smallest niche audience possible, but this isn't fully the correct way to do it.
Market to niches, instead of niching down what you do. This Rick Rubin interview with Tim Ferris is a great example of that.
Look at the topics they cover from this title:
In this podcast, Rick talks about his experiences in a way that is relevant to the audience.
While the host of the podcast also helped to steer it in this direction, Rick leans into it and gives the audience what they want.
Make sure with your music releases you create the music for yourself, but the content around it to give value or tell a story to your audience.
3) He releases everything in a concentrated time period.
These videos were all posted in a few day span.
This make it look like a bigger signal spike to the audience since Rick Rubin is popping up all over their feed.
Another great recent example of this was when Roland released the SP404 MK2, they sent out the device early to content creators so that when the release date came they could all drop their content.
This creates a feeling of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) for the audience. They start to think they need to get the piece of gear or watch the interview because everyone else is doing it.
The hype starts off artificial but when orchestrated properly it begin to snowball into real momentum.
For your next launch try to make a sequence that build up anticipation and concentrated noise for a specific day or event.
4) He speaks on his experiences and what he see’s.
He tells his stories and get the audience involved.
This clip from the 60 minutes interview he did is a good example.
By telling your stories you allow the person on the other side to make a better connection with you. It gives them a reason to support what you are releasing.
Don't be scared to let the audience know more about yourself. I know I need to do more of this one for sure.
5) He uses support from community.
No one can do it alone, so collaborate and work together with others in the community. All boats rise in high tide.
By doing this interview with his friends, among others, Rich Rubin was able to get on so many different channels that took clips from these interviews and reposted it.
Or wrote an article on it like this one lol.
The point being, Rick Rubin didn't need to waste more time to make more media. He made one piece of media and allowed others to distribute it.
If your up for it, try some of these strategies that Rick Rubin uses next time you go to release your creations!
